Our client is an established construction company based in the City of London, known for delivering high-quality projects across restoration, refurbishment and specialist contracting. As the business continues to grow, the finance team is expanding to strengthen reporting, compliance and operational efficiency.

We’re seeking an experienced, hands-on Accountant / Finance Officer to support the Finance Director in managing the day-to-day running of the finance function. The successful candidate will take ownership of core accounting tasks, ensure full compliance with CIS requirements, and be an expert on Sage50.

You’ll also provide guidance and oversight to a junior team member, helping to develop their skills and maintain high standards within the finance function.

• Manage daily accounting operations including purchase ledger, sales ledger and bank reconciliations.
• Oversee all CIS processes – verifying subcontractors, managing deductions and submitting returns to HMRC.
• Maintain and optimise Sage50, ensuring all data is accurate and reconciled.
• Support month-end and year-end processes, including journals, accruals, prepayments and reconciliations.
• Prepare management reports and financial summaries for the Finance Director.
• Assist with budgeting, forecasting and cash flow management.
• Supervise and review the work of the junior accounts team member.
• Liaise with external accountants, suppliers and internal stakeholders as needed.
• Support continuous improvement of finance systems, controls and reporting.

We’re looking for a reliable, detail-focused finance professional with a strong technical foundation and a proactive mindset

Essential:

• Demonstrable experience using Sage50 (advanced level).
• Strong knowledge and practical experience of CIS (Construction Industry Scheme).
• Experience in the construction or contracting sector.
• Good understanding of month-end accounting (journals, reconciliations, management reporting).
• Confident Excel user
• Excellent attention to detail and time management skills.
• Collaborative approach and willingness to support a small team.

Desirable:

• AAT qualified or studying towards ACCA/CIMA preferred but will accept QBE
• Previous experience supporting a Finance Director or senior finance manager.
• Experience leading or mentoring a junior team member.
• Exposure to improving finance processes or introducing efficiencies.
